Week 2 in Mr. Houck’s Class, by Devon Mickels

Every week one student in our class gets to sit out the super quiz and write the weekly update on our class.  This week’s update was done by 7th grader Devon Mickels.  Thanks, Devon!

This week in Mr. Houck’s class, we started our storytelling unit. In this writing unit we are to write stories about ourselves. This week we wrote a story about a lesson we learned or an accomplishment. This storytelling unit is going to continue for several weeks. Then later in the year we plan on having a storytelling night where all the parents can come and listen all the stories us students have written. To start off this storytelling unit we listened to a story called Man & Beast, which gave us a good idea of how to tell the stories we were going to write.

Also this week in class, we started our maps unit. We have done many things this week for the maps unit. One of them was we grabbed a partner and we made a paper mache globe. Another thing we did for the maps unit is we took a quiz on the oceans and countries of the world. Personally I found this to be the most fun.

Another thing we did this week is took a root word prequiz, which was seeing how well we know word roots. Then later in the year we will take the same test again and see how much more we learned. Along with the root words we learned 14 new vocab words. Some of the new vocab words we learned include befuddled, slink, dainty and blemish. Also just for a fun way to help learn the vocab we played vocab charades with all the vocab words that we have learned so far.
