We just finished our class read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. A lot of students enjoyed it and we wrote a paper on one of its major themes as a class. Next week we would like to watch the 1983 movie and eat a cupcake (favorite treat of some of the characters). A permission slip has been sent home to give the OK to participate in this class activity.
We’ve also been working on our storytelling unit. Each week students are introduced to a new theme that they write a story on. Week #1 was a lesson learned/accomplishment. This past week was an adventure. We will have two more themes after we have returned from our field trip. At the end of the 4 different stories, students are going to select one. They will then polish their story and practice telling it. Our culminating event is a storytelling evening on 10/19 from 4:30-7:30. Everyone is invited. Students should be working on their stories in their writing spirals. Asking about their story and having them tell it is a great way to practice.
And finally…our first overnight field trip! We will be leaving from school Monday, 9/19 and returning on Tuesday, 9/20. This trip is packed full of activities as well as important team building time. We will be staying in tents at a KOA. Some students are bringing tents to share with others. Everyone needs to bring a sleeping bag, a lunch for the first day, flashlight, change of clothes and basic toiletries. If for some reason a student cannot attend, they still need to come to school.
Conferences are October 4th & 5th. I will be sending home more information and posting it on this site next week.
Have a great weekend!
