Week 20 in Mr. Houck’s Class, by Isaac Parker

Every week one student in our class gets to sit out the super quiz and write the weekly update on our class.  This week’s update was done by 8th grader Isaac Parker.  Thanks, Isaac!

This week in Mr. Houck’s class we finished and presented our shoeboxes. Our shoeboxes had to show all of the six simple machines: the screw, pulley, inclined plane, lever, wheel and axle, and a wedge. We all put our shoe boxes at our seats, then went and looked at other people’s and voted on whose we thought had the best pulley, lever, inclined plane, screw, wheel and axle, wedge, overall look, and whose had the best name.

This Monday was Chinese New Year. Our class and Mrs. Young’s got together and ate tofu and noodles. Afterward we paraded through the halls, yelling happy new year and passing out red envelops with pennies in them (the red stands for good luck, good fortune, and joy). On Tuesday afternoon we looked at an alphabet, but the alphabet was made up of letters from ads that we had seen.  Then we talked about ads and how they persuaded us to buy their products, like by using fear, or pretty people.

On Wednesday we had someone from the library visit us and show us how to find books on our topic. We also brainstormed topics for poster making. The topics were things that we should improve as a school.
