Week of October 22nd

It was a pleasure to hear the wonderful poems that were shared this week. Many were quite humorous, but others were more serious or thoughtful. The recitations were good practice for our more formal upcoming speeches on explorers. Details for the speech will be sent out later.

In connection with our study of salmon, we are learning of healthy streams and the water cycle. A home survey went out today regarding water usage. Please spend a few minutes to help your child fill it out. Be sure to send it back to school on Monday, so we can see how well we are conserving our resources.

We have a field study planned for Thursday, November 8th. We will be studying the spawning salmon at Eagle Creek and participating in related activities. Please return the permission slip if you have not done so already. Space is still available for chaperones.

In writing, students spent time this week creating rough drafts of the environmental challenges faced by one of several Native American tribes. Ample time was provided to complete the rough drafts, but those who were absent or inefficient need to catch up this weekend. Go to http://www.nmai.si.edu/environment/ to watch the videos or to print off pictures, diagrams, or maps. Next week, we will revise and edit the articles at school. The finished product is due on Wednesday, November 7th.

You are invited to an end-of-the-term celebration on Friday, November 16th. We will meet in the gym at 3:00 with the other intermediate classes. After sharing a salmon song, we will return to our room so that you can inspect our feature articles on the environmental challenges and also biography cards of the explorers. I have plenty of apple juice; feel free to bring some cookies  to share!

Lastly, CHAMPS (Corbett High Association of Mamas and Papas of Seniors) is once again selling Christmas wreaths. Since my little boy is a senior this year, let me know if you would like to order one of these beautiful 24″ wreaths. If you pay by mid-November, each wreath is $20. Those paid for later will be $25. Thanks!
