Week of December 10th

Our reading times have been awesome this week! The students have really been engaged in their books and enjoying their time. Please be sure that your child is also reading at home each night (and recording it on the homework log). Almost everyone is remembering to calculate the weekly totals at home on Sunday, so our Monday morning graphing time is flowing much more smoothly.

Most students finished final copies of the nature poems this week. Just a few need to be completed this weekend. Several students also need to return the permission slips, so that I can send the poems to Honoring Our Rivers. I will also be compiling class books, with a poem and drawing from everyone who meets the Tuesday deadline. I expect the book to be marvelous!

A few students have other poems that they would like to try to get published. Creative Kids is an excellent place to send poems, stories, or word puzzles. See http://www.ckmagazine.org/submissions/ for detailed information. Several of my former students, as well as my two sons, have had their work published in that magazine.

Work continues on our colony research. At this point, students should have written rough drafts for their five subtopics and also decided on five events for the timeline. We will finish both the colony star display and timeline next week. I will be scoring them over the holiday break, and will not accept late entries. Those who were behind were instructed to work this weekend to catch up. (Plenty of time and assistance has been provided in class. Only those not using their time wisely are in danger of not finishing.) Also remember that the map test of the thirteen colonies is on Monday.

Thank you to everyone who has given me advance notice of appointments or upcoming absences, and to those who have arranged to pick up make-up work. It really helps when students are caught up when they return to class.
