How many different ways can you arrange the letters in the word CORBETT? (see below for the answer!)
If you can’t figure it out quickly, ask one of our 6th graders! The Corbett Middle School 6th grade math team traveled on Friday to Fort Vancouver High School and participated in the Math Is Cool competition. The team took 3rd place overall, after participating in individual tests, team multiple choice tests, mental math, math ‘relays’, and (the student favorite) the college knowledge bowl.
Also, Emily ‘JoJo’ Croak took 3rd place in the individual category, out of almost 100 competitors. Way to go, Jojo!
In addition to hanging out and doing a lot of math, our 6th graders defeated 8 medium pizzas and a bag of Jolly Ranchers, contemplated the effects of sliding on a tile floor after dipping their socks in vegetable oil, and taught Mr. Leone and Mr. Houck how to slice flying fruit with a ninja sword. It’s harder than it looks.
Take the number of letters in the word and multiply: 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1. Divide by any repeated letters: /(2 x 1). So (7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1) / (2 x 1) = (7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3) = 2520
