Week of February 18th

The second trimester ends next week. As our culminating event, the intermediate classes will be presenting a visual display of our study of the colonies and a five-act play telling the story of the Revolutionary War. The show begins at 2:45 p.m. in the gym on Thursday, February 28th. If you arrive a few minutes early (not before 2:30 p.m.), you will be able to view the colony boards prior to finding a seat for the performance.

This is a low budget production. British soldiers should wear red shirts and Patriots may choose blue, black, or gray shirts. That is all the costume that is required. Few props – you’ll need to exercise your imagination!

Mackenzie from the Lower Columbia River Estuary Partnership visited our room on Tuesday for a session on native and invasive plants. On Tuesday, March 5th,  we will meet her at Mirror Lake within Rooster Rock State Park to plant native shrubs, in order to reclaim the land and shade out the invasive Reed Canary Grass. Prior to our work party, we will take a short hike in the gorge. We are accepting all willing chaperones. Please sign and return the blue permission  slip if you haven’t already.

Historical fiction stories were revised and edited this week. Those students who have been completing each section on time have finished. Others need to complete the revisions this weekend. Next week, we will write the final copies. Due date is Wednesday, February 27th.

Next week, our students will be completing the OAKS state tests in math and reading. Fifth graders also are tested in science. We will be starting right away each morning, so please make sure that your child arrives at school prior to 7:50, in order to be ready to go. A good night’s sleep and healthy breakfast will also prepare them to do their best.

Ben Morrison, a Corbett High School junior, and one of my former students, has organized and is hosting a chess tournament on Saturday, March 2nd. All proceeds from the tournament will go to raise money for the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund, in honor of his little sister, Nina, who died of the disease several years ago. Please see http://chessforfa.wordpress.com/ for details and registration.

Interested students brought home flyers for the wrestling camp, which begins next week. Please let me know if your child will be attending, so that I know where they are going after school.

Lastly, if your child wants to take part in the student art festival, creations need to be submitted to Mr. Young at the high school by Tuesday. Kids can either exhibit their work or offer it for sale. This project will qualify us for the Communicare Grant which can bring $2500 into our school and $7500 into the Community.
