Middle School Parent Meeting Notes

Spring Parent Meeting
Here’s what’s coming up at Corbett Middle School!

Spring Oregon Coast Field Trip!
April 23-24th (Weds-Thurs)
Marine Biology emphasis
Staying at Drift Creek Camp near Lincoln City
Itinerary: Explore tide pools, Oregon Coast Aquarium, and more!
We need chaperones! Please email Sarah Dummer if you’re interested: sdummer@corbettcharter.k12.or.us
Blue permission slips are coming home this week; they include packing lists
$30 per kid (same cost per parent volunteer)
Please make sure you fill out medication forms and send your student’s dose to school at least a week in advance

Cardinal 3
If you haven’t heard about this yet… there’s a problem! Talk to your student today.
Publishing, service, and speaking components
8th grade service projects need to be completed by May 13th (one week before our Wildhorse trip)
Deadline for completion of Cardinal 3 portfolio: May 20th

Spring Curriculum
Marine biology
Classification of living things
Body system studies
Dissection: flowers, worms, and frogs!
Poetry anthology (major writing projects)
Important: the last week of April / first week of May is a five-day week (Friday, May 2nd)

8th Grade Promotion
Evening of May 29th 6:00pm – 7:30ish in the big gym
Special evening to celebrate our 8th graders’ accomplishments and time shared at CMS
Bring your loved ones… but arrive early if you want a good seat!
Hear several of our favorite 8th grade speeches!
Performances from our MS band, rock band, and choir teams!
Mr. Houck’s famous slideshow!
(Casual) dance & pizza afterwards! Till 10:00. Free for 8th graders, $5 for 6th/7th
Next day: 8th graders don’t come to school, ½ day for 7th & 6th graders, potluck lunch

Travel Club
June 2015, 10 day trip
Visit Greece & Italy! Renaissance and Ancient Civilization sites!
Open to all current and former CMS students and their parents
Total cost: approximately $4200 per student (includes everything except lunch and spending money), $4800 per parent
Can pay in installments over the next year

Portfolio Night
Student-led conferences 5/27
Students get to show off their best work from the year 3:45-7:00 in your child’s core classroom.
Cardinal 3 portfolios and other big projects from the year.
Drop in – open house

Wildhorse
Our culminating field trip at the end of the year! May 21-22 (Weds-Thurs)
$60 per student including all meals (same cost per parent volunteer)

Facility Update
Our middle school is nearly 100 years old… and out of code
May 20th ballot: bond for $9.41 million dollars (keeping taxes the same for Corbett residents)
Get this building up to code, including seismic updates campus-wide

Ms. Young is in her 12th year in the Corbett Middle School. Besides spending her days with middle schoolers, she loves to travel (often with middle schoolers as well), spend time with her family and read.
