Summer Enrichment Classes 2014

Corbett School District is pleased to announce summer enrichment classes being offered by Corbett School District teaching staff.  Students sign up directly with the instructing teacher via email and payment must be received by the district office one week prior to the class start time.

Culinary Arts

Come and learn how to create a professional 5 course culinary Dinner. We will learn how to make appetizers, salads, create your own salad dressing, main dish, sides, and a dessert.

Pirates, Pioneers and Explorers

Come and create arts and crafts from the day of pirates, The Oregon Trail and Lewis and Clark.

Learning and Fun in the Kitchen

Come and create arts and crafts in the kitchen. Each day will have a different theme. We will have Dinosaur Day, Bug Day, Superhero Day and Hawaii Day.

Cooking Around The World

Come and create a different meal from a different country each day. Experience meals from Italy, France, Germany and and China.

ENRICHMENT CLASS TITLE: Hiking the Gorge!

AGE/GRADE: Entering 3rd grade – Entering 7th Grade

DESCRIPTION: Hiking the Gorge is an awesome way to experience and see different parts of the Gorge. We’ll go on at least four different hikes in different parts of the Gorge. On some days, we may even do two or three. The hikes will be varied from easy to difficult, short to long, and include different types of geological features. It’s important to note that the hikes will not be the same hikes that we went on last summer.

DATES: Week of June 30th: Monday 6/30 – Thursday 7/3

TIMES: 8AM (drop-off) until anywhere between 4 PM and 5 PM, depending on hike

LOCATION: Meet in the lobby of Corbett Grade School

DROP DEAD DATE: Monday, June 23, 2014

CLASS SIZE: Minimum: 10 Maximum: 13

COST PER PUPIL: 10 students= $150 13 students= $115 (includes transportation money)

Basketball Literacy!

In 1891, Dr. James Naismith was inspired by a rowdy group of P.E. students to create a new game that required grace, accuracy, and teamwork. One hundred and twenty-three years later, basketball has become a global phenomenon played by nearly half a billion people.

In this class, we’ll be reading a variety of books about the history of basketball, as well as a novel (TBD) about the subject from 8 a.m. – 10a.m. The second half of this class will be a lot like basketball mini- camp, with students learning fundamentals of the game from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m.

Sound Recording and Composition

We will utilize technology found at Corbett, such as iPads, computers, and other devices to create original compositions. We will record sounds found throughout the school, sounds we create with instruments, doors, cans, etc. as well as learn to use pre-made sounds found within recording software on our devices. We will then use these to create our own musical masterpieces.

No musical experience required, only interest!

Age: Students entering 6th-9th grade.

Dates: Offering two week long sessions (M-Th) June 23-26 & July 14-17)

Time: 1-3pm

Location: Corbett Middle School

Deadline sign up: June 16 (1st session) and July 7th (2nd session)

Soccer Camp

Come enjoy soccer this summer by working on foot skills, passing skills, team play, and good times! Through small sided games, drills, ball work and scrimmages, we will help build strong team play by developing important fundamental skills.

No soccer experience required, only interest!

Date: Offering a week long session (M-Th) from June 23-26 & July 14-17

Time: 9:30-11:30am

Location: Corbett Soccer Field

Drop dead date: June 16 (1st session) and July 7th (2nd session)

Claymation Animation!

Grades 3-8

Claymation is any animation done using a character or characters, created out of clay. Traditionally, Claymation has been made using stop-motion video, but with the advent of computers and digital cameras our class will create a Claymation film over the course of a week.

This class will focus on hands-on activities that engage students, especially artistic and kinesthetic learners. Students will write their own storyboard, design a set, sculpt and work with clay characters, plan and organize their films with a team, and use their imagination to guide, edit, and design a Claymation short film!

 

Dates: June 23-26th (Monday-Thursday)

Math Workshop

Age: Students entering 3rd – 8th grades

Mr. Phillips is offering a math workshop this summer to work on math concepts and math facts in a fun way! There will be two focuses this summer. The first will be helping lower levels transition between “Bridges Math” into “Saxon Math”. Basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division will be a main focus this summer. Mr. Phillips currently teaches 6/5 and has taught Algebra I and Algebra II. Any students looking for additional help over the summer to prepare for next year feel free to sign up. The classes will be once a week for one hour each day. The duration of the workshop will be for six weeks. After six weeks I will put the offer out to extend the workshop to those that would like to continue.

Date(s): Start – Wednesday, June 11th – Wednesday, July 16th

Time: Time of the class will be Wednesdays from 9am-10am

Location: Springdale School

Piano Lessons w/ Mr. Phillips:

Age: All

Mr. Phillips is offering piano lessons to any students at any skill level. I will accommodate all schedules the best I can. Lessons will be once a week for a half hour each session. I am going to offer sessions Mon-Fri between

8am and 3pm. Parents do not need to be here for the lesson.

Piano Lessons, Continued:

The lessons will last a duration of 6 weeks and then you can continue on past that for any duration you choose.
