Room 12 News – January 5, 2015

It is so NICE to be back!  I hope that everyone had a relaxing and fun winter break and now it is back to work. The New Year is the beginning of a lot of things in our classroom.  Take a look:

Science – We are beginning our unit on Magnetism and Electricity.  This week students will observe the interaction of permanent magnets with a variety of common materials.  They will discover that magnets display forces of attraction and repulsion and measure the force between two magnets as the distance between them changes.
Lewis and Clark – Before break we learned about the reason behind the expedition and the men who would be leading the way and those that had joined to help out.  We are beginning writing in journals just like many of the men did along the way.  Today we began at Camp Dubois, near St. Louis.  Students were asked to create a character and explain their reason for joining and how they are feeling about being away from home for over two years.  They also were asked to sketch a keel boat.  Each day we will read a passage from Lewis and Clark’s journals, mark our way on a map, and learn about some of the major events that happened along the way.
Writing – We are beginning a new Unit of Study – Informational Writing.  Today we looked at different types of informational books and made of list of what they had in common (headings, table of contents, subtitles, captions, photographs, maps, glossaries, indexes and more).  Tomorrow each child will be ask to write a piece about a topic that they know something about (something that interests them). They were asked to read up a bit on it tonight (books or the internet).  This Informational On-Demand piece will help to see growth that will hopefully take place over the next several weeks.  I have attached the directions that were sent home with them today.
Kid Blog – On Tuesdays and Thursdays we will be using our new Chrome books to practice our keyboarding skills by blogging.   The site only allows class members to see each other’s posts and I think that parents can see their kids, but I have to set that up later this week (it is password protected).   To begin we will be blogging about their reading books.  Kids will be practicing their skills of finding evidence to support their claims about a book.
High Frequency Words –  We have 14 students in our classroom that have mastered all 300 high frequency words.  Those students will get an added bonus of vocabulary words.  Each week they will be given a packet of ten words to look up the definition and know how to spell correctly.  Those students still working on their high frequency words will continue to be assessed each Wednesday.
Google Apps – We have FOUR kids that have yet to turn in their Google Email Application Form.  If you have signed one and you child has turned it in THANKS! If not, the kids know who they are and have another form that was sent home today.
Michelle Dawkins About Michelle Dawkins

My husband and I have lived in Corbett since 1983 and I have taught at Corbett Grade School since 1994. Chris and I loved having our children grow up in the community of Corbett. They both received a great education and made many life long friends while attending school here. Both Steph and Joe graduated from Corbett. Joe is a graduate of Oregon State University and Steph has graduated from Linfield College and completed her MBA at University of Tennessee. Chris and I are extremely proud of our children! Both are enjoying life and share our love of nature.

"If a child is to keep his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in." ~Rachel Carson
