Corbett Arts Program with Spanish at Springdale

CAPS

We are excited to announce CAPS, the new program option for families with children attending Corbett School in grades K – 8. This program will be open to resident and non-resident students who are in the Corbett School or have been admitted to Corbett on a space available basis. Registration is currently open and can be accessed through the Corbett website: http://corbett.k12.or.us. If there are more applicants than space available for any given classroom, a lottery will be held. Registration is open until May 17th.

What’s the vision?

CAPS will begin as a K-8 program with multi-age classrooms where the arts will be integrated across the curriculum. All students will get classroom instruction in the regular disciplines such as math, science, social studies and language arts infused with arts education as well as specific music instruction and Spanish instruction. ‘The arts’ is a broad domain that includes visual arts, drama, dance, and music. We will use these as a lens through which to view and understand the world and age appropriate curriculum as defined by the state. The staff that will be at Springdale are committed to creating a unique environment to bring this vision to reality.

The renovation of Springdale School will be accomplished in a phased approach so that in the future, we will expand the program to include a high school component that will provide a drama department – something that has long been gone from Corbett Schools.

Integral to the vision for CAPS is community involvement. We welcome, encourage, and need the involvement of parents and others to help make this program thrive! And although drama has been absent as a regular school class, we have had the benefit of an exceptional community drama program in Corbett Children’s Theater. We hope to form a strong partnership with them to augment opportunities for our students. In addition to CCT, CAPS is also committed to forming relationships with other community groups.

What will school look like at Springdale?

We plan to open two K-2 classrooms, two 3-5 classrooms and one 6-8 classroom in the fall of 2012. All classrooms will be multi-age and embrace the continuous progress model already present in Corbett on the main campus. Students will, ideally, stay with the same teacher for three years before moving on to the next level. We will have lunch delivered to us from the main campus and eat in our classrooms along with our teachers. Students in the middle school classroom will head to the Corbett campus for band/choir and be there at the end of the day to participate in sports. Mr. Long will be our 6-8 teacher, Ms. Steichen will teach 3-5 and Vanessa Knight will join the staff as a K-2 teacher. We still have two hires to fill the other positions.

How will students get there?

Students will be transported to Springdale from the main campus and returned to the Corbett campus at the end of the day to take their regular buses home. We also intend to have a bus route that extends into Troutdale or Gresham for transfer students who attend either Corbett Schools or CAPS – this will be determined in the near future.
