Mrs. Young’s Newletter

Argument Writing:
We continue to find evidence to support our claim about whether or not Corbett Grade School Cafeteria should serve chocolate milk to students. This week we worked on adding quotes and “unpacking” our evidence. We learned phrases to help push our thinking and we worked on redrafting our writing.
Reading:
Our young readers continue to make book selections that hold their attention.  The number of Rockin’ Readers continue to grow. Thanks for reminding your child that reading at home is not only required but the best way to improve reading skills.
I am reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane for our read aloud. Please ask your child to tell you about it.
Colonial America
We are currently going through a CSI investigation about the mystery of the lost colony of Roanoke. The different scenarios have the kids thinking deeply about what really did happen to these pioneer colonists. Do you know what happened to them?
  • The colonists traveled to the Croatoan Island and because part of the Croatoan Tribe?
  • The colonists starved to death?
  • The colonists were lost at sea?
  • The colonists were taken hostage of killed by the Spanish?
  • The colonists were attacked by neighboring tribes?
Art – Sculpture
This week we worked on paper sculptures. Our creations are located in the hallway, right outside our door.
Valentine’s Day (Thursday, February 14)
Instead of purchasing store-bought cards, our class will be creating their own cards to exchange with five of their classmates. Our hope is to make cards that are a bit more meaningful. We would also love to share a cupcake and some juice in the afternoon (we will exchange Valentine’s, enjoy a treat, and play a game at 3 pm). Please let me know if you would like to help out.
Contributions needed:
  • canned vanilla frosting
  • canned chocolate frosting
  • cupcake decorations
  • apple juice
  • Valentine’s Day paper plates
  • Valentine’s Day napkins
  • Valentine’s Day cups
