5 WEEKS!

Dear Families,

I hope you’re enjoying the beautiful Spring weather! It’s been nice to get outside more and be able to explore my backyard with my toddler. It’s been both fun and memorable “teaching” him that we don’t eat chicken poop, we look for “beep beeps” before we go- run into the street, we don’t hit chickens or throw rocks at them, we don’t put rocks there, or there, or even right there, and we don’t step in the pets’ water bowl. It’s all about making memories and avoiding the digestion of chicken poop, right?

We are cruising in our fantasy/science-fiction reading unit. Three out of the six book clubs have finished their books and have started a second book. The other three are continuing in their books. So far in this unit, we’ve placed an emphasis on identifying themes and how themes in this genre are complex, identified the importance of setting, built connections between characters, and discussed how our initial beliefs and opinions on characters can mislead us. As we progress in this unit, we will work on taking just one of our ideas about these books and crafting an argumentative essay. We have to be careful as there are only five weeks of school left. Woah…

This upcoming week will mark the end of our geography unit on the United States. We’ll end this fun unit with four interactive games using the program Kahoot! It’s a fun way for students to demonstrate an understanding of what they learned. While we finish this unit, we will begin our highly-anticipated geology unit. This unit will be jam-packed with opportunities for students to better understand our natural surroundings, especially the Columbia River Gorge and why it’s just so beautiful despite the crazy winter weather.
